PYITHU Hluttaw Speaker U Khin Yi met members of the Committee on Youth, Women, Children and Elderly Rights and the Committee on Hotels, Tourism and Culture yesterday to discuss their duties, ongoing activities and plans.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Speaker U Maung Maung Ohn and officials from the Pyithu Hluttaw Office. Committee chairpersons Daw Win Maw Tun and U Htin Aung Shein briefed the Speaker on their committee structures, responsibilities and current work.
Deputy Speaker U Maung Maung Ohn said the Hluttaw was providing necessary support to lawmakers and committees, including capacity-building talks and training programmes, to help representatives effectively carry out their duties.
Speaker U Khin Yi highlighted the important roles of both committees in supporting national development and improving the social and economic well-being of citizens. He urged the committees to review existing laws and propose new legislation or amendments where necessary.
He called for closer coordination on youth-related issues, including education, drug prevention and sports development, and stressed the need for legal frameworks such as a National Youth Development Law and Youth Volunteer Service Law.
The Speaker also emphasized the importance of developing human resources through education and vocational training. He said programmes such as free education from kindergarten to Grade 9 and youth talent development initiatives were valuable and should receive legal support.
He encouraged lawmakers to help expand access to education for children who are out of school and promote Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes to create more employment opportunities for young people.
Regarding women’s and children’s rights, U Khin Yi called for stronger legal protection against domestic violence, sexual violence, psychological abuse and online harassment. He also urged further efforts to strengthen laws related to elderly care and protection.
The Speaker concluded by calling on the committees to work closely with relevant ministries, review current laws and develop necessary legislation to contribute to national progress and improve the lives of citizens. — MNA/ST
