The regional government’s cup inter-district chess tournament took place in Myeik, Taninthayi Region on 7 April in conjunction with a prize awarding ceremony.

The event was held with 45 athletes in total from 5 to 7 April with the aim of improving sport standard in the region, turning out new chess players and recruiting outstanding athletes to represent Taninthayi Region. The contest is categorized into two classes—Myanmar traditional chess and international chess. The teams representing Dawei and Myeik Districts emerged champions in both competitions. Concerned officials presented awards, cash and champion trophies to prize winning teams.

The event organizing committee chose 16 athletes to represent Taninthayi Region in the inter-region/state chess contest.

International chess contest and Myanmar traditional chess event will be held in Nay Pyi Taw from 1 to 8 May this year, according to the Sports and Physical Education Department.—Khaing Htoo (IPRD)
