The mayor of Nagasaki City in western Japan has been re-elected for a fourth four-year term after defeating three rivals.

Tomihisa Taue garnered more than 86,000 votes in Sunday's election. The runner-up received about 54,000.

The 62-year-old mayor promised to work harder to hand down the experiences of the atomic-bombed city to younger generations and to the world.

Taue was backed by non-affiliated voters and supporters of the Liberal Democratic Party and other parties.

The former city government official took up the post in 2007, after the incumbent mayor was shot dead during an election campaign.
