Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, U Soe Aung, permanent representative of Myanmar to UN U Kyaw Moe Tun, Director general of Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, U Kyaw Moe Oo and official from department of disaster management attended Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction held from 13th to 17th May in Geneva, Switzerland.
It was reported that the event was held in member states of the UN every two year and over 4000 representatives from 128 countries attended it.
The Myanmar delegation participated in opening and closing ceremonies, Ministeral level closed door meeting, High level dialogues, workshops and side events.
They also discussed current situation of disaster risk reduction in Myanmar and international assistance, cooperation with international community in disaster risk reduction.
On the second day of the Platform, the Deputy Minister delivered speech regarding the progress of Myanmar disaster risk management.
In the Ministerial level meeting, he spoke of success and failure of 32 prioritized sectors of the 2017 Disaster Risk Reduction project, the assessment of it, reduction of climate change, disaster risk reduction headed by Vice Presidents, and priorities in developing the country in right balance. He also took part in discussion with other countries.
As Myanmar is the chairman of Asean committee on disaster management, Union Minister read a letter concerning disaster management on behalf of Asean.
Thaks to the participation in the 6th Global Platform, Myanmar will gain benefits such as working more closely with international community, resolving climate change problems together, working together with international community to reduce disaster risk making the best use of experiences and advices of the foreign countries, being able to inform Myanmar policy on reducing disaster risk and how they are being systematically steered and meeting with countries willing to provide technical assistance and energy support.—MNA ( Translated by Alphonsus)
