The Forest Department will distribute over 57,000 saplings to some villages in Sagaing Township free of charge. The department set up a nursery in Minkan Area and planted saplings in order to deliver the seedlings to some villages in the township.

The saplings will be dispensed to the villages in June and July, said U Nyunt Hlaing, the staff officer from the Forest Department. “We established a nursery where a variety of 57,200 seedlings ranging from teak to hardwood are grown. We will inform the village administrators in advance about delivery of saplings and distribute them to villages, universities and schools by cars” he added.

The purpose of delivering the saplings is to beautify and green the natural environment, draw public attention in planting and conserving the forests and contributing local people to their livelihood which is their basic necessity.

In an attempt to prevent local people from extracting timber illegally from Minwuntaung protected forest area, engaging in jade mine, digging up the grounds, hunting and smuggling of wildlife parts, forestry officials are making field trips to share knowledge on elimination of timber production.—Ko Min (Indaw)
