Two people were killed and four people injured in a house fire in Kalaw Township, Southern Shan State on 29 May.

The fire started after a grandchild of the house owner named Daw San San Win , 50 years old played with an electric mosquito killer racket. The sparks from the electric mosquito killer racket spread to a nearby motorbike, leading to the fire. The house owner and her maid named Ma May Zin Oo, 22 years of age died with burn injuries and four others including a 11-year-old girl were hurt in the incident. The injured people have been sent to a public hospital to receive medical treatment.

Firefighters and local people led by Lawmaker for Shan State parliament U Than Htike, Township Administer U Khin Min and the head of the township police force Hla Naing Oo extinguished the blaze that was brought under control at about 8:20 p.m. and was completely put out 10 minutes later by using five fire engines and four water tankers. A car and four motorbikes were badly damaged and one wooden house destroyed by the flame.
The estimated loss of property due to the fire is around Ks. 22 million. Action has been taken against the house owner over fire negligence by the local police station.—IPRD
