With technical support from UNDP, the Anti-Corruption Commission and the Mon State Government jointly organized a workshop on administration and corporate responsibility in Mawlamyine yesterday.

Mon State Chief Minister’s speech

Firstly, the Mon State Chief Minister delivered a speech where he extolled Mon State’s active participation in teaching the general public about eradicating corruption. He said this will contribute to creating a corruption-free society in the country.

The Chief Minister said implementing transparency, accountability and responsibility will aid government departments and organizations in reducing losses in government revenue. He called for cooperation in visibly reducing corruption and increasing the Good Governance Index.

ACC Chairman’s speech

Following this, ACC Chairman U Aung Kyi also delivered a speech. He said this workshop is held with Sections 4(b) and 4(c) of the Anti-Corruption Law in mind. He said these laws places duties on the ACC to ensure the emergence of clean governance and good administrative system and to increase integrity and responsibility in public administration.

The ACC Chairman said accountability, transparency and response are the central components of a good administrative system and important elements of democratic transition.

He said accountability is more than just adhering to established laws and procedures and involves placing public interest and benefit first when interacting with the people, departments and organizations.

U Aung Kyi said successfully implementing corporate governance practices will bring numerous benefits to the private sector and attract more investors. He also expressed his hope that civil society organizations will practice transparency and accountability while encouraging government and private corporations to do the same.

Workshop commences

The workshop then began with Mon State Minister for Planning, Finance, Immigration and Population, U Wunna Kyaw, and Dr. Tin Maung Than discussing under the heading ‘Responsible Administration Sector’, U Win Myint Aung, UMFCCI representative and Director of City Mart Group, on ‘Responsible Economic Sector’, ACC Office Director Daw Aye Myat Mon on ‘Responsibility in Public Services’, local businessperson U Moe Kyaw on ‘Responsible Businesses’, local CSO representative Daw Yi Mon Su, Executive Director of National Enlightenment Institute, on ‘ Responsible CSOs’, and UNDO representative U Zaw Min Naung on ‘Dangers and Possibilities of Corruption’.

Later in the afternoon, attendees asked questions during the Q&A session and the Chief Minister concluded the workshop with a closing speech. —MNA
