US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has acknowledged that it will take more time to launch a coalition to ensure maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking at a symposium in Washington on Monday, Pompeo referred to a security plan proposed by the US.

He said it will take more time than the United States wishes, adding that he's confident the world understands the importance of the plan.

Pompeo said the US needs international assistance to protect commercial transit through the key strait, stating, "We'll be successful."

The US government and military have briefed representatives of allies and friendly nations on the plan.

However, concerns have been raised that the proposed coalition might provoke Iran.
Britain has proposed a separate, European-led, initiative to ensure shipping safety in the Strait of Hormuz.

Pompeo has disclosed that Japan is among the countries that have been asked to join the US-proposed coalition.

The Japanese government is expected to cautiously study the proposal in view of the responses from other US allies.
