A ceremony to mark world elephant day was held at the administrator’s office of Environment and Conservation Department in Hugong valley wildlife sanctuary in Tanai Township, Myitkyina district, Kachin state this morning.
At the event, Tanai township administrator U Kyaw Lwin made an opening speech, followed by a talk about the aim of the event by forester U Nyunt Hlaing. Then, staff officer U Myo Nyunt of the department made a closing speech saying that the department has carried out research on habitation of wild elephants in the upstream areas of Tayon creek and Tawan creek as well as across Naga Hills. According to the research, there were a lot of elephants in the valley. Elephant conservation tasks have been carried out with the technical and financial assistance of WCS. He also called for the participation of local people in order to make the elephant conservation tasks a success.
Then, the attendants fed bananas, sugar canes and pineapples to the elephants.—Township IPRD
