Taninthayi, 15 August

In an attempt to protect students from floods, eight more schools in low-lying areas in Taninthayi Township were closed on 13 August due to flooding following severe rains hit the area for many days.

According to the observations at 10 a.m. on 13 August, the water level of the Taninthayi River has exceeded 2 ft. above its 24 ft. danger mark. The number of schools that were closed temporarily due to downpours in the township from 9 to 14 August reached 44, according to a source from the township education officer’s office.

The students from the closed schools will be compensated for the missed lessons and will be given additional time to study when the floodwaters decrease.—Nan Thar Yi + Htein Win (IPRD)
