THE Regional Informational Workshop on Deep Seabed Resources and the Blue Economy for ASEAN and BIMSTEC countries was concluded yesterday after two-day discussions of experts.

 

The second-day of workshop focused on the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the works of signatories to the Convention in South Asia/ Southeast Asia, legal framework to be practiced in exploring minerals and natural resources at floors of deep seas, the role of International Seabed Authority (ISA), promotion of regional and international cooperation in the Blue Economy being implemented in ASEAN and BIMSTEC countries, and creating opportunities for capacity-building in the region.

 

Senior government officials, representatives from ASEAN and BIMSTEC countries, those from ISA, Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS), Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS) and Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) attended the last day of workshop.

 

The conclusion ceremony of the workshop was held in the afternoon, with the remarks by Director-General of Ministry of Education Dr Zaw Myint and Secretary General of ISA Mr Michael Lodge.

 

The two-day workshop was jointly organized by Myanmar government and the ISA and supported by the KMI.
