Security has been tightened in Hong Kong for the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Pro-democracy activists have been calling for mass demonstrations in the territory.

Protesters dressed in black have taken to the streets on Tuesday morning, chanting and brawling with pro-Beijing demonstrators as police try to keep the two sides apart. Several people have reportedly been arrested.

Hong Kong's government held a ceremony to mark the anniversary. Helicopters carrying the flags of China and Hong Kong flew over Victoria Harbour.

Some shops have closed for the day. And a number of subway stations have suspended service near planned demonstrations.
