French media outlets say 4 people, including police officers, are dead after a knife-wielding man launched an attack inside police headquarters in Paris.

The incident occurred at around 1pm on Thursday. The suspect was reportedly shot and killed by another officer. Authorities are investigating the motive for the assault.

The headquarters is located on Cite Island, close to Notre-Dame Cathedral. Transportation to and from the island has been restricted. One metro station nearby has been completely shut down.

Media outlets say the assailant may have been a staff member at the headquarters. They add there is no indication the assault was an act of terrorism.
