Thabeikkyin, 7 November


13 people were killed and 29 others injured after a passenger bus overturned in Thabeikkyin Township, Mandalay Region on 5 November; the Ministry of Home Affairs reported on Wednesday.


The accident took place between mileposts 6/1 and 6/2 on the 7th-Mile-Tagaung Road near Kyaukkyi Village in Thabeikkyin Township at about 6:10 p.m. on 5 November. A passenger bus with 42 people on board on the way to a meditation center in Shweku Town from Mawlamyine for a Kathina robe offering ceremony flipped over after the driver lost control of the vehicle. Another passenger bus coming from an opposite direction also hit a tree while attempting to evade the over-speeding vehicle. Thirteen people including two Buddhist monks and one woman died on the spot and 29 others sustained injuries in the incident.


Out of the injured people, seven people were seriously hurt in the incident. The injured people were sent to a military hospital in Thabeikkyin and a public hospital in Mandalay. The passenger bus driver identified as Naing Min Tun is being questioned over reckless driving by the police.
