Union Minister for Labour, Immigration and Population U Thein Swe discussed garment sector and labour issues at the separate meetings with delegates from the Garment Advocacy Group of Eurochan Myanmar and the International Labour Organization at his office in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.

At the meeting with a delegation Garment Advocacy Group of Eurochan Myanmar, led by Mr Serkan Tanka, the Union Minister discussed matters relating to assistances from the European Union in expansion of Myanmar’s garment sector.

The Eurochan Myanmar was cooperating with Ministry of Commerce, related ministries and garment businesspersons to prevent the shortages of raw materials at the factories in Myanmar due to China’s COVID-19 outbreak.

They also discussed the measures for setting minimum wages to be completed in a timely manner, skills assessment of the National Skill Standard Authority (NSSA) for workers’ skill development in Myanmar and continuing cooperation on Myanmar’s industrial development after seeking the advice from the Eurochan Myanmar.

At the meeting with ILO’s Deputy Director-General Mr Greg Vines, the Union Minister discussed the implementation of IT reform with ILO-Korea Parnership Programme, medical reform with ILO-Luxembourg Project, management reform with ILO-Vision Zero Fund Project and legal reform with ILO-Labour Law Reform Project, and the condition of drawing a Master Plan by the ILO.

They also discussed to establish a regular office as the ILO has been long operating its liaison office in Myanmar with 14 projects and more than 80 employees, and the condition of ongoing implementation of National Complaints Mechanism-NCM in accordance with the ILO’s provisions.—MNA (Translated by Kyaw Zin Tun)
