Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin says he has tested positive for the coronavirus.

Mishustin informed President Vladimir Putin of the test result in a video conference on Thursday.

Mishustin is in charge of Moscow's anti-coronavirus measures. He assumed the post of prime minister in January after the resignation of Dmitry Medvedev and his Cabinet.

Putin told Mishustin that it could happen to anyone and thanked him for his work so far.

The first deputy prime minister is expected to perform Mishustin's duties while he is hospitalized.

Johns Hopkins University in the United States says the total number of confirmed cases in Russia topped 100,000 on Thursday.
