Vehicle production in Thailand fell 69.1 percent in May from a year earlier. The drop reflects sluggish demand worldwide due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Thailand is the largest auto manufacturing hub in Southeast Asia. Many Japanese automakers operate plants in the country.

The Federation of Thai Industries says 56,035 vehicles were manufactured in May.

Domestic car sales in May amounted to 40,418 units, down 54.1 percent from the same month last year. Auto exports fell 68.6 percent year-on-year to 29,894.

The association corrected its comment last month that April output hit an all-time low in terms of units. It now says the record low of 23,695 units occurred in November 2011, when Thailand was hit by massive floods.
