Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) is endeavouring to ensure the adequate water supply year over year in the six downtown townships and other townships, and water pipeline replacement project from Hlawga to Pyay Road under the 2019-2020 budget is 80 per cent completed.
The project has reached Sawbwargyigone area in Insein Township. It is a five-year project. This year, the project is expected to cover near Khayaypin Road in Mingalardon Township, said an official of YCDC.
The 66-inch-diameter reinforced concrete pipes are being replaced by 1,600-mm ductile iron water pipe for laying pipe network to Yangon city from Hlawga Booster Pump Station.
The replacement works are underway in the respective wards of each township.
“The project implemented under the current fiscal year budget is nearly finished,” said U Sein Ohn, an official with YCDC when he inspected the laying work along Myintawthar Road, Thakayta Township on 27 July.
At present, the Gyophyu, Phoo Gyi, and Nga Moe Yeik reservoirs are the main sources of water supply in Yangon, providing over 205 million gallons of water every day.
To expand the water distribution network, projects are underway at Lagunpyin and Kokkowa, which aim to cover 90 per cent of the region’s population by 2025, according to the YCDC.
In addition, the YCDC is creating water supply resources to provide adequate drinking water to Yangonites and is taking measures to reduce wastage in urban water distribution, with the assistance of international development donors.
Yangon Mayor U Maung Maung Soe has urged Yangonites to systematically use water as half the water supply is getting wasted amid an increase in Yangon’s population.
At present, the Yangon authorities are raising awareness about systematic water meter installation, dealing with water pipe leakages, unsystematic water consumption, management of water loss in urban water distribution, and curbing illegal connections to the water pipe network, he added.
To fulfil the requirements of water in the region, creating new water resource, laying water pipe, replacement and repair works are carried out as per the annual budget.
