3 killed, 179 hurt as jet skids off in Istanbul

A passenger plane skidded off the runway when landing at an airport in Istanbul on Wednesday. The aircraft was badly damaged. Officials say three persons were killed and more than 170 were injured.

 

The plane operated by Turkish low-cost carrier Pegasus Airlines departed from Izmir, western Turkey, and was arriving at Sabiha Gokcen airport on the eastern side of Istanbul. More than 180 people were on board.

 

Turkish officials say 179 people were injured and taken to a hospital.

 

Advisories for heavy rain and strong winds were issued at the time of the accident. Local aviation authorities closed the airport to investigate.
