THE Department of Fisheries has announced plans to stock over 38 million fingerlings across Myanmar during the 2025-2026 financial year.
The fingerlings will be released mainly into the country’s major rivers — the Ayeyawady, Thanlwin, Chindwin, and Sittoung. In addition, stocking will take place in other rivers, streams, lakes, and natural ponds nationwide. The primary species to be introduced include rohu, catla, and mrigal carp.
This nationwide stocking initiative is intended to promote the expansion of private fish farming, helping to generate more employment opportunities and household income for local communities. It is also expected to contribute to the country’s foreign income through increased fish production, thereby supporting the national economy.
Alongside this initiative, the Department of Fisheries is also providing basic training in fish farming to local farmers and those interested in fish hatchery. — ASH/KNN
