5 dead, 2 injured in Philippine car crash

June 7

Philippine police said five people, including three South Koreans, died, and two others were critically injured when a "speeding" sport utility vehicle (SUV) collided with a trailer truck along a highway in Bulacan province, north of Manila, before dawn Wednesday.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Julius Alvaro told reporters that the frontal crash happened around 2 a.m. local time in Baliwag town. The five people died at the scene, he added.

Alvaro said the SUV, with seven people on board, including the driver, was heading to the international airport in Metro Manila when it collided head-on with a 22-wheeler trailer truck in the opposite lane.

Initial police investigation showed that the SUV, which came from Nueva Ecija province, swerved to the opposite lane and collided with the truck.

A relative of the victims who rushed to the crash site told reporters that the victims were family members and were heading to the airport after their holiday in the Philippines.
