59th World Meteorological Day celebration was held at Royal Ace Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw yesterday morning.
At the event Union Minister U Thant Sin Maung said the theme of 59th World Meteorological Day “The Sun, the Earth and the Weather” was aimed at participation of all toward improvement of meteorological conditions. A developing country Myanmar had been greatly affected by climate change and to mitigate the effect of climate change maintenance and conservation of natural environment and water resources had to be conducted on one part. On the other part people need to have knowledge about climate change, meteorology, natural environments. People need to take note of weather forecast, notices and warnings issued by Department of Meteorology and Hydrology so that their travels, crops, livelihoods etc. were safe from natural disasters, said the Union Minister.
Next, a message sent by World Meteorological Organization Secretary General was read by Director General Dr. Kyaw Kyaw Moe.
Afterwards, Union Minister U Thant Sin Maung presented awards to winners of World Meteorological Day essay competition and observed the photographic records and exhibits displayed by Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.
The event was attended by Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr. Aung Thu, directors general, retired personnel of Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, officials and invited guests.—MNA
