A 84-year-old male biker participated in the Cycling Race in Yangon yesterday, showcasing the inclusive nature of the race. The Yangon Region government organized the men’s and women’s open cycling race as part of the lead-up to the 77th Independence Day celebrations.
The event commenced yesterday at 6 am with cyclists departing from designated starting points. The race drew the participation of the Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein, regional ministers, departmental officials, athletes and spectators.
The men’s race began near Daewoo Garment Factory near Htaukkyant Nwekhway bus-stop, following Pyay Road to the finish line at the People’s Square near the Yangon Region government office. Similarly, the women’s race started at the Mingaladon Airport Junction and also followed Pyay Road to the same finish line.
Following the conclusion of the races, an award ceremony was held at the People’s Square. The Yangon Region chief minister presented prizes and cash awards to four top winners in both the men’s and women’s open categories. Honorary cash awards were also given to senior athletes aged 60 and above and young participants aged 10 and above who completed the race.
The competition included a total of 608 cyclists, comprising 506 male and 102 female athletes from Yangon Region, Ayeyawady Region, Shan State and Mon State. — Arkar Linn/ KZL
