At least eight persons died in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh early on Wednesday morning after a truck filled with sand overturned and fell on their vehicle, confirmed a local cop.

The mishap occurred in the state's Kaushambi area, near Delhi.

The dead were family members and close relatives. They were returning home after attending a wedding, said media reports.

Most of the dead were women, added the reports.

One of the tyres of the sand-filled truck reportedly burst, causing the truck to overturn and fall on the vehicle parked near it.

State Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief at the mishap, and assured all possible help for the victims' family.
