THE ASEAN Day for Disaster Management was held in conjunction with the 7th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Management, and the Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response in Shwe San Eain Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw, yesterday.

 

The rotating Chairman position for the ministerial meeting was held by Dr Win Myat Aye, Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, and the Joint-Chairman position was held by Mr Kristoffer James Purisima, Assistant Secretary/ Deputy Administrator for Administration. The ASEAN Secretary-General and ministers from member nations discussed managing natural disasters in the region including policies, action plans and individual experiences as a nation.

 

Dr Win Myat Aye discussed Myanmar’s efforts on managing natural disasters, rehabilitation, development, the importance of being well aware and informed on natural disasters, and cooperation with other ASEAN nations.

 

The Union Minister then discussed ASEAN’s cooperation and future plans regarding receiving and resettling people in Rakhine State. This was followed by a session for reviewing and approving the results of the three-day meeting.
