The traditionally-woven chicken coops is on the verge of extinction in Kyaukkyi Town, Taungoo district, Bago Region, according to the handicraft manufacturers.
“We make a bamboo basket for the chicken trap. It is traditional arts which passed generations to generations. However, most of the young people are lack of interest in traditional arts and crafts. We are worried about traditional skills being on the way to extinction, a basket maker Saw Po Poe stressed. “We use bamboo in weaving chicken baskets. It takes two to three hours to make a basket. We make many kinds of bamboo baskets, including fish trap, chicken trap, eel trap, etc.,” he added.
The business can run throughout three seasons — summer, monsoon and winter. The traditional basket making business can earn income amid the coronavirus pandemic, the artisan’s family said.
