DURING the rainy season, which creates favourable conditions for the survival and spread of various viruses affecting the respiratory system of humans, there is a higher risk of respiratory infectious diseases. These include seasonal influenza, respiratory tract infections, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Everyone needs to take preventive measures to protect themselves and maintain the health of the respiratory system.

On 4 June, according to the Ministry of Health’s announcement, there is currently no reason for concern regarding the spread, outbreaks, or fatalities related to respiratory diseases in Myanmar. However, in order to prevent the potential spread of such diseases in advance, the public is advised to be cautious, take preventive measures, and remain alert.

In daily life, to stay healthy and hydrated, it is necessary to drink about two litres of water per day. It is also advisable to drink electrolyte solutions. Eating fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C and ferrous supplements daily can help maintain good health. In order to prevent respiratory tract infections and strengthen the immune system, especially in old age, one should also consume foods that contain zinc and protein.

Among people infected with respiratory tract infections, symptoms such as fever, nasal congestion, runny nose, coughing, and sore throat may appear. Those who exhibit such symptoms should avoid going to crowded places and wear a mask properly when going out. If not wearing a mask, they should cover their nose and mouth properly with a tissue or cloth when sneezing or coughing to prevent the spread of infection to others. They should take preventive measures such as avoiding contact with infected individuals, using sanitizer and soap regularly, and following hygienic practices.

In the rainy season, COVID-19 is not officially classified as a global pandemic, but rather identified as a locally common infectious disease that spreads more easily due to seasonal changes. Although COVID-19 is now regarded as a disease that can regularly spread in the community, it still poses a serious risk to certain groups, such as the elderly, people with diabetes, chronic lung diseases, heart conditions, and pregnant women. These individuals have to receive COVID-19 vaccinations.

COVID-19 vaccines can effectively prevent the spread of the virus, reduce the severity of symptoms, and help prevent death. So, it is advisable for individuals to receive the COVID-19 vaccine along with other recommended vaccinations, without delay. That is why, to achieve physical well-being, mental peace, and harmonious relationships, it is essential to cultivate knowledge and mindfulness about health-related aspects of addiction.
