A BRIDGE on Seikkantha street, Kyauktada Township, is being upgraded at a cost of over K60 million, said U Lin Khaing, the secretary of the road and bridge subcommittee, Engineering Department, Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC).
The upgrade is being conducted on a 800- feet- long bridge on Seikkantha street between Strand road and Merchant road. The project is being implemented with funds from the YCDC budget.
“We are upgrading the bridge on Seikkantha street (lower block). The bridge has been designed by the Yangon Heritage Trust (YHT). Based on the design, the bridge is being upgraded through cooperation between our road and bridge subcommittee and their experts. As per the new design , the bridge will get a slightly winder platform, a oneway car road, and a bicycle way. The project is being implemented now,” said U Lin Khaing.
“The upgrade is expected to be complete in September. Such a project is being implemented for the first time as a pilot,” he added.
Seikkantha street is 50 feet wide and it is one of the main roads connecting the business and residential are as. Moreover, some of the main buildings are situated along the street.
The upgrade of the bridge on Seikkantha street is being undertaken as per the design submitted by the Yangon Heritage Trust, to meet international standards.
The design of the bridge keeps the convenience of the people in mind, and it will help control traffic, ensure convenience of car parking and safety, mitigate flooding, and create shady spaces. Moreover, it will make it more convenient for the YCDC to control traffic and undertake upgrades and renovations in the future.
