Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he has tested positive for the coronavirus, and urged people to get vaccinated or boosted.

Trudeau tweeted on Monday, "This morning, I tested positive for COVID-19. I'm feeling fine -- and I'll continue to work remotely this week while following public health guidelines."

In Canada, a record high of over 54,000 new cases were reported on December 30 last year as the Omicron variant spread across the country. The daily tally declined to about 9,000 daily cases one month later.

Canada has a high vaccination rate. More than 80 percent of Canadians aged five or older have received at least one shot, and nearly half of those aged 18 or older who are eligible for a booster have had one.

Trudeau received his booster shot last month.
