The number of people confirmed infected with the coronavirus worldwide topped 8 million on Tuesday.

The tally, compiled by researchers at Johns Hopkins University in the United States, was 8,005,294 cases and 435,662 deaths as of 00:00 UTC on Tuesday.

The US has the highest number of cases, at 2,110,791. It is followed by Brazil with 888,271, Russia with 536,484, India with 332,424, and Britain with 298,315 cases.

The US death toll is also the largest in the world, at 116,114. Brazil is second with 43,959 deaths, followed by Britain with 41,821, Italy with 34,371, and France with 29,439.
