Coronavirus restrictions were eased in and around the Australian city of Melbourne on Tuesday for the first time in about three-and-a-half months.

The move came after the state government of Victoria determined that the infection level had fallen enough.

Customers gathered at bars and celebrated as the lockdown was relaxed, allowing people to eat at restaurants and other establishments.

Some restrictions still remain in place. Residents of metropolitan Melbourne can only travel up to 25 kilometers. Cafes and restaurants can only have a maximum of 20 people indoors and 50 outdoors at a time.

Victoria Premier Dan Andrews called on people to continue observing anti-infection measures to keep coronavirus cases low.

The southeastern state has the country's largest death toll from COVID-19.

Victoria's government implemented tough restrictions in and around Melbourne in July. It banned dining at eateries and prohibited outings other than shopping for daily necessities.
