HATRED has always had harmful consequences, but modern communication technologies have amplified its reach and influence, turning hate speech into a powerful vehicle for spreading divisive ideologies worldwide. When ignored, hate speech threatens peace and development, often fueling conflict and human rights abuses. The United Nations has consistently taken a stand against hatred, working to protect human rights and uphold the rule of law, while addressing its effects on peacemaking, gender equality, and support for youth.

The UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech describes hate speech as communication that targets or discriminates against individuals or groups based on identity factors such as religion, ethnicity, or gender, though a universal legal definition remains under debate. Hence, all global countries have to raise public awareness about countering hate speech, no advantage in using hate speech in society and using hate speech leads to devastation.

The United Nations stated that the Plan of Action emphasizes the crucial role of partnerships with tech and social media companies, especially the use of AI, in tackling hate speech. While AI provides important tools for early detection and conflict prevention, it carries risks if not guided by human rights protections. UN Member States have made AI governance a priority through the Global Digital Compact and renewed their commitment to combating online hate speech.

In July 2021, the UN General Assembly highlighted global concerns over “the exponential spread and proliferation of hate speech” around the world and adopted a resolution on “promoting inter-religious and intercultural dialogue and tolerance in countering hate speech”. The resolution recognizes the need to counter discrimination on gender and nationality and hate speech and calls on all relevant actors to address this phenomenon, in line with international human rights law.

In July 2021, the UN adopted a resolution to promote inter-religious and intercultural dialogue and tolerance. Everyone should understand that expressing their feelings with hateful speech is wrong. To prevent a domino effect of widespread destruction caused by just one hateful statement, everyone must control and carefully consider their emotions, and behave, speak, and live accordingly.

To establish a peaceful and harmonious human community, renewed strength and energy are needed. A single word of praise can be like a medicine that strengthens the foundation of a society, but everyone must understand that a single word of hatred can easily destroy all the efforts and constructions that have been made. Therefore, everyone should be careful and value the words they speak.
