The governor of the US State of New York says he's ready to sign into law police reform measures recently adopted by the state legislature.

The measures include banning the use of chokeholds and the repeal of a law that kept police officers' disciplinary records secret.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday that the time has come for dramatic action, and pledged to pass the most aggressive police reforms in the United States.

Cuomo's announcement comes amid nationwide protests following the death of an African-American man in police custody.

The governor said the reform package could be signed into law as early as this week.
