Union Minister for Education Dr Myo Thein Gyi said Myanmar was formulating the National Science, Technology and Innovation-STI Policy so that universities become the institutions based on research and innovation. He made the comment at the virtual meeting with international science and technology ministers on 3 October.

The 17th Ministerial Meeting on Science and Technology was held online on 3 October in conjunction with Science and Technology in Society Forum that takes place from 3 to 5 October.

Japan’s Minister of State for Science and Technology Policy Mr Inoue Shinji made opening remark at the meeting which was attended by 40 science and technology minsters.

At the meeting, Union Minster Dr Myo Thein Gyi stressed the importance of Science, Technology and Innovation-STI developing a country’s economy, agriculture, environment, energy, communications and health sectors.

He added that Myanmar was now formulating the National STI Policy after enacting the Science, Technology and Innovation Law on 25 June 2018.

Encouraging the universities to establish Open Science Access Centres, the ministry will continue making efforts to develop science, technology and innovation sectors for the success of Sustainable Development Goals with innovative ways, he said.

He further said that the ministry is working on international cooperation, capacity building, investment in technology and infrastructures, applied research, drawing up of 21st century curriculum, team learning, public and private cooperation, universities and workplaces cooperation, and utilizing science, technology and innovation effectively, skillfully and transparently.
