DRD spends nearly Ks. 973 million for rural developmental tasks in Mawlamyine District

The Department of Rural Development under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation has reportedly embarked on constructing rural roads, bridges, and water supply facilities in Mawlamyine District, Mon State.

Developmental tasks are being undertaken in 34 villages in six townships, Mon State, with Ks. 972.75 million funds allotted by the local government in the fiscal year 2019-2020, said U Aye Naing, Deputy Director of the DRD. The projects are aimed at supplying clean and safe drinking water to rural people and enabling them to transport their products to other areas across the country in a quick manner.

 

The DRD is currently building one mile of earthen road, 7.79 miles of gravel road, 7.25 miles of granite road, two concrete bridges, four box culverts and six aqueducts in Mawlamyine, Kyaikmaraw, Chaungzon, Thanbyuzayet, Mudon, and Ye Townships. The DRD also awarded tinder to private construction companies to dig up 12 deep wells, one manual well, an earthen lake, nine water fetching systems, and 12 other tasks in the aforesaid townships to ensure availability of hygienic and safe water for rural people. All developmental tasks are slated for completion ahead of rainy season.

A total of 28,780 people from 5,118 households from 20 villages in six townships now benefit from similar schemes which have been implemented in the financial year 2018-2019. Once completed, 63,953 people from 10,578 households from 34 villages will be able to enjoy the benefits of rural roads, bridges and water supply tasks, the DRD said.—Myint Oo (Myeik)
