Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Win Myat Aye said yesterday that the relevant ministries, INGOs and social organizations are working together for law enforcement to protect children and women from various forms of mental and physical abuses.

The Union Minister attended an educative campaign of the Orphans Reduction and Protection Association (Nay Pyi Taw) held at Thukha Soe Hotel in Pyinmana.

At the event, he said that his ministry was implementing the Early Childhood Care and Development Law that was enacted in February 2016, and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to help the children for their survival, development, protection and their participation in the communities.

Dr Win Myat Aye said, “These tasks were performed with the collaboration of relevant ministries, NGOs, social communities, international organization, parents, family members and public.”
The Department of Social Welfare has set the minimum norms for protection of children at the philanthropic centres, while the department is conducting the courses for early childhood care and development programmes.

He assured that children would only be granted for citizenship in accordance with the existing law, although they can be registered for birth.

Myanmar has signed in the Declaration of Commitment to End Sexual Violence in Conflict in 2014.

Daw Kyi Kyi Nyunt, Chairwoman of the Orphans Reduction and Protection Association (Nay Pyi Taw), held talks on consequences and unwanted pregnancy, Police Officer Daw Thu Zaw Lwin of Child Protection Unit about child rape and trafficking in persons, Secretary of Nay Pyi Taw Council Area’s Women’s Affairs Federation Daw Nway Moe Aye about prevention of women and girls from various forms of abuse and Deputy Director Daw Hlaing Moe Myat of Department of Social Welfare about actions against possible abuses.

The event was also attended by the Deputy Minister U Soe Aung, the directors general, women affairs committees, representatives from relevant organizations, parents and students.

Union Minister Dr Win Myat Aye also visited Oo Yin Child Development Philanthropic Centre in Thekyun village of Uttarathiri Township, and discussed minimum norms for child care and protection and the child rights.
