An explosion has injured at least nine people, most of them tourists, in an area near the pyramids of Giza, outside Egypt's capital, Cairo.

The blast occurred on Sunday as a tourist bus was travelling near the construction site of a new museum being built with Japanese assistance.

Security authorities say seven South African tourists on board the bus and two Egyptians in another vehicle suffered cuts and other injuries.

Footage and photos taken at the site of the explosion show a blasted concrete wall to the right of the bus, whose windows were shattered.

No one has yet claimed responsibility.

Egyptian authorities suspect it was a terrorist act targeting tourist buses. Many such vehicles are in the area daily, carrying tourists to and from the pyramids.

Last December, a bomb attack in Giza killed three Vietnamese tourists and a guide aboard a sightseeing bus.

Such attacks continue in Egypt despite efforts by the government of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to improve security since the unrest in the aftermath of the Arab Spring pro-democracy movement.
