17 March

A 17-year-old boy hit an Australian senator in the head with an egg, after the senator made derogatory statements about Muslims.

The boy smashed the egg on Fraser Anning's head while Anning was being interviewed by journalists on Saturday in Melbourne. Anning turned and slapped the teenager in the face. The boy was then pinned down on the ground. The incident occurred the day after shootings at two New Zealand mosques left 50 people dead and dozens injured.

Immediately after the massacre, Anning said that the real cause of the bloodshed was "the immigration program which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand." He described Islam as a religion that calls on people to commit murder.

Many people criticized the senator's comments, and some expressed support for the boy's action.—NHK
