The governing center-left Socialist Workers' Party is set to win the national election in Spain but fall short of a majority. And a new far-right party is likely to win seats for the first time.

The state broadcaster says with 97 percent of the votes counted, the Socialist Workers' Party has gained more seats in the Congress of Deputies than it held before the election, securing the leading position.

The Socialist Workers' Party is expected to negotiate with other parties to establish a coalition.

The new party Vox is expected to win over 20 seats in the House of Deputies .

Far-right parties have not won much support in Spain where the military rule under General Francisco Franco lasted till the mid 1970's.

The election results in Spain could encourage other far-right movements in Europe.
