A sightseeing bus has plunged off a road into a ravine in northwestern Tunisia leaving dozens of passengers dead and injured.

The large bus with 43 on board crashed through a guardrail on a winding road on Sunday.

Tunisia's state-run news agency quoted the health ministry as saying that at least 24 people are dead and 18 others injured.

Multiple media outlets say all the passengers were Tunisians.

Footage from the scene shows the severely damaged vehicle at the bottom of the ravine, with its seats strewn into a nearby river.

One witness said major accidents often happen on the road and that measures must be taken to prevent such occurrences.

In another accident on the same day, a large bus fell off a bridge onto a frozen river in the Zabaykal region of eastern Siberia.

The bus was heading to the region's main city of Chita.

The local government says 19 people died and 21 people were injured. More than 40 people were on board.

Local police say a flat tire may have caused the accident.
