The first coordination meeting for the preparation of Initial Report for the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nay Pyi Taw at 10 am on 28 May 2019. The meeting was attended by the officials from the concerned ministries and government organizations.

At the meeting, U Kyaw Tin, Union Minister for the International Cooperation made an opening remark and stated that Myanmar is committed to the protection and promotion of human rights; and, therefore, Myanmar became signatory to a number of international human rights treaties. As a state party to the human rights covenants, the periodic reports have to be presented by the government to the treaty bodies in accordance with the provisions in the treaties. For the first time, Myanmar is planning to submit its Initial Report to the treaty body of ICESCR which Myanmar ratified in 2017. It is needed to provide the necessary facts by the concerned ministries and the organizations in preparation and compilation of the Initial Report.

After that, the participants joined in the discussion on the preparation of the Initial Report.—MNA
