The US First Lady will attend the opening ceremony next week at the Tokyo Olympics. Jill Biden will lead the US delegation at the Games.

Biden will travel abroad on her own for the first time since her husband took office in January. A White House advance team traveled to Tokyo to check if the visit would be possible.

It's not uncommon for presidents to skip Olympics overseas. Previous first ladies have represented the US in their place.

Biden has traveled frequently across the US to promote the administration's vaccination campaign.
