THE Department of Fisheries puts a three-month halt to the fishing season in the Myanmar Sea from May to July in the current financial year 2025-2026.
Last year’s close season was in April-June. This year, the fishing closure season was changed. Offshore fishing trawlers must shut down their operations during the Q2 to protect fish species and marine resources. However, inshore trawlers and boats are allowed to keep running the business.
As the close season has already started, all kinds of offshore fishing trawlers have suspended their operations and returned to the shores.
There are several fishing blocks in Ayeyawady, Taninthayi and Yangon regions and Mon and Rakhine states. About 1,500 large offshore fishing trawlers are put out to sea in Taninthayi Region during the open season. — ASH/KKa
