A ceremony to present crop compensation to farmers whose farmlands were destroyed by floodwaters in 2018 was held at the meeting room of the General Administration Department in Wetlet Township, Sagaing Region on Tuesday, said an official from the Department of Agriculture.

Also present on the occasion were Sagaing Regional Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Kam Za Mon, the head of the regional Department of Agriculture U Win Hlaing Oo, the lawmakers, Chairman of the township management committee U Soe Hlaing Maung and departmental staff.

A total of 48,195 acres of croplands belonging to 16,816 farmers from 43 village-tracts have been damaged by the floods. The regional government provided more than Ks. 2.4 billion to the famers as crop compensation from its emergency funds, said U Hla Moe Kyaw, Deputy Staff Officer of the Department of Agriculture.

Commenting on the damage of crops due to floodwaters, U Kyi Aung, a farmer from Muugyi Village in Wetlet Township said, “I encountered many difficulties as my sesame plantations were destroyed by floodwaters last year. I am very delighted at receiving crop compensation and would like to say many thanks to concerned officials”.—Moe Thauk (Shwebo)
