Flood victims evacuated as water level of Taninthayi River exceeds its danger mark

Taninthayi 78 August

Government offices, staff housings and some houses in low-lying areas in Taninthayi Town have been submerged by flooding and flood victims were evacuated to temporary rescue camps, according to a source from the General Administration Department.

According to the observations recorded at 8 p.m. on 7 August, the water level of Taninthayi River has exceeded 17 ft. above its danger mark due to incessant heavy rains in the area since early August. A total of 155 disaster victims from 32 households from two flooded wards were moved to two separate temporary relief camps. Arrangements are being made to set up similar relief camps if necessary.

The disaster risk supervisory office is being created in the compound of the township fire brigade to fundraise, allocate and spend the contributions for the flood victims.—Nan Thar Yi-Htein Win (IPRD)
