Mandalay flower market prices have dropped by half with many flowers entering the market. The flowers are blossoming in the mountain region during the COVID-19 period, said U Aung Myint, a flower trader at Myodaw flower market, Patheingyi Township, Mandalay Region.
 

“Myodaw flower market, a central place of Mandalay, is selling many species of flowers. The flower prices have been dropping for nearly a month. Especially, the chrysanthemum (Gandhama flower in Myanmar) price is on the decline. Previously, chrysanthemum flowers were sold for K2,500-3,000. Now, the price of the chrysanthemum flower is only over K1,000. So, the flower growers are unhappy with the lower price of their plants. I am growing chrysanthemum flower as well as other species. The local growers are selling their flowers for only K500-800,” he said.
 

The price of the flower is down because there are difficulties in transportation during the pandemic period. The flowers which are to be sent to Yangon remain in this market because of transport difficulties. We have many flowers in this market. So, we could not sell all the flowers. That is the reason why the flower prices have plunged, he added.
 

The Myodaw flower market was opened in February 2020 by Mandalay City Development Committee with over 90 shops. The market is a wholesale market, and more than 100 people are selling the flowers daily. —Than Zaw Min (IPRD)
