Foreign visitors to Japan at 96 pct of pre-COVID level in September

The number of foreign visitors to Japan in September hit 96.1 percent of the same month of 2019 before the COVID-19 outbreak, government data showed Wednesday.

An estimated 2,184,300 foreigners visited the country in the reporting month, marking a 10.6-fold jump from the same month last year, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization.

Visitor numbers have maintained a rapid recovery pace with arrivals staying above 2 million for a fourth consecutive month, supported by more international flights and the yen's rapid depreciation.

More than 17 million visitors have arrived in Japan in the first nine months of 2023, data showed, still far from the record of about 32 million in 2019.
