More than 55,000 people have died from COVID-19 in France, the country's national public health agency, Sante Publique, said in a statement on Sunday.

France's COVID-19 death toll has risen to 55,155, 175 of which were recorded in the past 24 hours, said the agency.

In total, 2,292,497 COVID-19 cases have been registered in the country, with 11,022 new confirmed infections over the past 24 hours.

France is planning a three-stage vaccination campaign that will initially target 1 million residents in nursing homes and their staff early next year.

Starting from February, the government aims to inoculate 14 million people with age-related risk factors or chronic diseases. A broader vaccination of the general public is scheduled for spring.
