THE Anti-Corruption Commission led a videoconference under the theme ‘Building Trust Between the Government and the Public’ to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations from Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.

As part of its strategy to supplement its 75th anniversary, the UN has launched the UN75 Initiative to gather public opinion and crowdsource solutions to global challenges. The videoconference was attended by representatives from Union-level ministries and institutions, civil society and youth organizations.

In his opening address, ACC Chairman U Aung Kyi said there may be gaps between the gradual increase in the hope, services and freedom the public expects from the government and the government’s actual range of capabilities. This is a challenge not only in developing nations but even in developed ones and there needs to be a solid foundation of trust between the government and the people to tackle these challenges.

The government needs to successfully achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and international and regional policy objectives to increase public trust. The Myanmar Sustainable Development Plan (MSDP) is divided into 3 pillars; peace and stability, prosperity and partnership, and people and planet.

The Keynote Speaker, Professor Dr Aung Tun Thet, explained the UN’s SDG 16 - peace, justice and strong institutions – and discussed the 8 basic principles to cooperation and building trust between the government, the people and the private sector.

ACC member U Zaw Win acted as the moderator for discussion between representatives from 16 Union ministries, 2 Union institutions, 1 business organization, 3 civil society organizations and 1 youth organization. Interested individuals from banks, entrepreneurs, civil servants and universities observed the discussion.
