A ground breaking ceremony to build a Japanese-backed new Yangon Specialist Hospital was held yesterday.
The government of Japan will provide about Yen 8.6 billion in the construction of the hospital and the Ministry of Health and Sports would contribute K42 billion to the project.
Upon completion, the new hospital will provide medical services including cardiology, cardiac surgery, neuromedicine and neurosurgery to the people and will promote the teaching, said Union Minister for Health and Sports Dr. Myint Htwe at the groundbreaking ceremony.
Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein also expressed his delight for establishing the new specialist hospital, calling it as a significant symbol of friendship and cooperation between Myanmar and Japan.
Japanese Ambassador to Myanmar Mr. Ichiro Maruyama said at the ceremony that he was delighted to see the launching of the construction of the hospital which was pledged by the Japanese Prime Minister Mr. Shinzo Abe.
Besides, the Ambassador pledged to take serious consideration into all-round upgrading of the New Yangon General Hospital which was constructed by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency about 40 years ago.
Mr. Masayuki Karasawa, Chief Representative of the JICA Myanmar, said the new specialist hospital would promote the medical services related cardiac and neuromedicine and meurosurgery.
At the auspicious time, the Union Minister, the Yangon Region Chief Minister, the Speaker of the Yangon Region Hluttaw, Yangon Region Social Affairs Minister, the Japanese Ambassador, and dignitaries drove the stakes.
In the afternoon, Union Minister for Health and Sports Dr. Myint Htwe attended a meeting on WHO collaborating centre for Research and Training on Malaria and Nursing and Midwifery Development at the Medical Research Department in Yangon. —MNA
